The Class B sixth-grade boys basketball team took home the CYO trophy for St. Aloysius for the second year in a row.

“This is the first time that St. Al’s had a consecutive winner ever,” said Coach Alan Golus.

Following their success in 2016, the boys moved up in class from C to B as league rules dictate.

“The final game, played on Sunday, March 26, was the most exciting yet,” said Golus. “Down nine points midway through the third quarter, this team exemplified a March Madness mentality and scored the go-ahead basket with a mere 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter. They foiled a spirited opponent who attempted to block several in-bound passes while the clock ticked down. The boys maintained their cool, played a team game and remembered all they were taught—and won the game 28-27. The sound of the final buzzer was almost drowned out by the cheers both on and off the court.”

Jay Priven now has the honor of being the only CYO basketball coach from St. Al’s to win three championship games. Golus has been on board for the last two.

“The chemistry exhibited by team members both on and off the hardwood is a testimony to all involved—coaches, players, parents, grandparents and siblings,” said Golus. “Playing in front of a cheering crowd each and every game made this season one to remember.”
