A Wheatley Heights man was sentenced Thursday to three to nine years in prison for causing a crash that killed a 19-year-old woman in Melville three years ago.

Brandon Charles had pleaded guilty last year at Suffolk County court to a charge of second-degree manslaughter.

Authorities have said the 21-year-old was driving a Chevrolet Camaro northwest on Little East Neck Road when he veered off the road and flipped over into a wooded area near the corner of Colonial Springs Road at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014.

A backseat passenger, Carla Flores of Wyandanch, was pronounced dead at the scene. The owner of the vehicle, Joseph Dunn, was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

Neither Dunn nor Charles would tell police at the scene who was driving, but investigators used blood on the driver’s side door to establish that Charles was behind the wheel, prosecutors said.
