With this year being the 50th anniversary of the Monterey Pop Festival, which was the major music festival that laid the groundwork for Woodstock two years later, it’s no surprise that music events like this have become all the rage. And while artists like Sheryl Crow are still maintaining solo tours (she’ll be at the Beacon Theatre on June 28), they are also happy to hop on board larger package concert bills (Crow will also be joining Willie Nelson on The Outlaw Music Festival at Northwell at Jones Beach in September). Here are a few other events that discerning music fans should be aware of.
Great South Bay Music Festival − July 13, 14, 15 & 16
Shorefront Park, Patchogue • www.greatsouthbaymusicfestival.com
This four-day event has something for everyone. The first night caters to emo fans (Taking Back Sunday/New Found Glory/Saves The Day), second night is a nod to rap-rock/reggae (311/The Wailers), third night is all about jamband nation (Gov’t Mule/G. Love & Special Sauce/Rusted Root/Zen Tricksters) and the final night is all about classic rock (Zombies/Eddie Money/Dave Mason/Poco/Jesse Colin Young/Aztec Two-Step).
Classic East Festival − July 29 & 30
Citi Field, 123-01 Roosevelt Ave., Flushing • www.theclassiceast.com
Feeding off the success of the uber-expensive Desert Trip that took place in October 2016 (aka Oldchella), promoters are tapping into boomers’ taste for classic rock with two dates that are the sister event for Classic West, which is being held at Dodger Stadium on July 15 and 29. In New York, the Eagles headline with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers open on Saturday, July 29. Fleetwood Mac is at the helm on Sunday alongside Journey and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Panorama Music Festival − July 28, 29 & 30
Randall’s Island Park, New York • 212-830-7722 • www.panorama.nyc
The multi-day Panorama Music Festival is held on Randall’s Island in New York City featuring a lineup too numerous to list here. Headliners include Frank Ocean, Solange, Tame Impala, Alt-J, Nine Inch Nails and A Tribe Called Quest, plus dozens of other bands from a wide variety of genres. At the heart of the festival is an interactive digital art experience called THE LAB, with six interactive installations and a massive 360-degree virtual reality theater.
The Outlaw Music Festival − Sept. 9
Northwell @ Jones Beach Theater
1000 Ocean Pkwy. • 800-745-3000 • www.jonesbeach.com
Willie Nelson gives Bob Dylan a run for his money in the Never Ending Tour department when he pulls into the South Shore to headline a bill that includes the aforementioned Crow along with indie folk outfit The Avett Brothers, Americana chanteuse Margo Price and Willie’s sons Lukas, fronting his rock group Promise of the Real, and J. Micah Nelson, who is a musician/visual artist known as the Particle Kid.
In the Spirit of the late Great Gregg Allman’s Laid Back Festival Tribute − Sept. 24
Northwell @ Jones Beach Theater
1000 Ocean Pkwy. • 800-745-3000 • www.jonesbeach.com
With the unfortunate passing of Gregg Allman on May 27, his spirit not only lives on in his music but with this festival that was on track to be a big part of his post-Allman Brothers Band life. Headlining will be longtime friend and former roommate Jackson Browne. The bill gets rounded out by fellow music veterans Steve Winwood and Peter Wolf along with ex-bandmate Jaimoe and his Jassz Band along with Garland Jeffreys & Scott Sharrard and the Backyard Band.
