SASS Foundation For Medical Research 25th Annual Outing

SASS Foundation For Medical Research 25th Annual Outing
The Dr. Frank Arena foursome

Despite a rainy day in May, 90 percent of the determined golfers and supporters of the SASS Foundation teamed up at The Creek Club in Lattingtown to participate in a fun-filled day and evening and raised six figures to fund cancer research. Even the rain could not dampen the golfers’ smiles and great enthusiasm throughout the day and evening.

A portion of the net proceeds from the Outing go toward continuing funding for The SASS Foundation Carol Litwin Memorial Award—a multi-year immune-oncology research project focused on breast cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center—which began in 2010 and continues due to Bob Litwin, tennis chairman, and the SASS Foundation’s loyal supporters and participants.

Dr. Francis Arena, president and co-founder of The SASS Foundation, provided an update on the latest in treatments and therapies in the fight against cancer. Arena introduced medical oncologist and researcher Dr. Elizabeth Comen, the 2017 SASS Foundation Carol Litwin Memorial Fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where breast cancer research has been funded by the SASS Foundation since 2010. Comen provided an update on her research that utilizes immunotherapy to harness the immune system to treat and potentially cure breast cancer cells. Comen thanked The SASS Foundation profusely for providing these funds to conduct this vital multi-year research in clinical trials to increase the cure rate in women with breast cancer.

Martin D. Sass, chairman and co-founder of The SASS Foundation, addressed the audience and thanked all for their involvement and continued support. He also thanked the many corporations and individuals for their participation that has helped to make a difference in the foundation’s quest to help eradicate cancer. Their vital support enables the Foundation to continue to fund this revolutionary research that brings us closer in our race to find a cure.
