boat 1603792 1280Staying safe and protecting your investment is something Allstate knows a lot about. Allstate offers recommendations and tips New Yorkers can follow for fun and safe boating this summer. According to PropertyCasualty360.com, in 2015, New York ranked third in the county for most accidents, deaths and injuries involving watercrafts. With these statistics, it is important for New Yorkers to consider the following safety tips when enjoying the time on the water this summer.

Recommendations for fun and safe boating

  • Be considerate of your fellow boaters
  • Let someone know where you’re going and how long you expect to be away
  • Always have a life preserver for everyone on board and one throwable flotation device
  • Carry a working VHF radio that is monitored by U.S. Coast Guard and all maritime law enforcement
  • Have a navigation system such as a GPS and carry a backup paper chart

“While having fun is a priority on the water, these simple tips can help boaters stay safe,” said Allstate New York Spokesperson, Jaclyn Darrohn. “In addition to keeping you safe, there may also be a discount on your boat insurance for completing a boating education course.”

However, even safe boaters can encounter mishaps on the water. Allstate data shows the most common claims are striking a submerged object and collision with another boat.

Allstate offers a checklist for what to do in case of an accident:

  • Stay calm
  • Determine the extent of any injuries or damage and, if needed, obtain medical assistance
  • Call the police to file an accident report
  • Don’t leave the accident scene unless your physical safety is at risk
  • Get the facts and essential details at the scene (See checklist for full list of accident information essentials)
