The Rotary Band of Great Neck performed its patriotic summer gala concert with music from The Beatles to John Philip Sousa in Parkwood Sports Complex on Monday, Aug. 7. Due to inclement weather, the performance was held indoors instead of at the Village Green.
Created by Michael Flamhaft and directed by Anthony Bavota, the program featured the national anthem sung by flutist Ava Steiner and comments by Rotary Club of Great Neck President Roger Chizever.
“I started the Rotary Club Band in 2001 with a little over 20 players,” said Flamhaft. “Made up at the time of several school-age players, the band performed very easy music, but to very large crowds, and there were many sponsors, too, which ended up raising money for Rotary charities. Today, the band has grown, the players are older and more experienced, and the group plays more typical band music, but the sponsors and donations are fewer and further between.”
