Nassau County Departments of Social Services, Health, Youth Board and Minority Affairs will hold a Public Information Forum for advocates in the Latino Community on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Health and Human Services Building, 60 Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Uniondale from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 101 A&B. The forum is the first in a series of planned information programs for advocates in the cultural, ethnic and religious communities of Nassau County to familiarize them with the policies and procedures of the Department of Social Services (DSS).
“These public information forums will go a long way in helping the many cultural and ethnic communities in Nassau County,” said County Executive Mangano. “Advocates will learn to better understand the programs offered by the Department of Social Services, and in turn be able to better serve their communities.”
These forums will focus on the program and admission requirements for DSS, as established by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS).
“We want all our County residents to become familiar with the programs and services of DSS,” added DSS Commissioner John Imhof. “Besides this first forum for the advocates in the Latino community, future programs will invite advocates from the Haitian/Creole, Muslim, East Indian, LGBT and Senior communities.”
“I’m excited that Nassau County is taking a proactive approach to meeting the needs of all County residents,” said Nassau County Office of Minority Affairs Executive Director Shelley Brazley. “Taking part in these forums will give the community a healthier understanding of the numerous programs offered by Nassau County DSS for our residents.”
Space is limited to 75 guests, with a maximum of two staff from each agency. Panelists will include bilingual staff of DSS Medicaid, SNAP, Temporary Assistance, Child Care and Services, along with representatives from the Department of Health’s WIC Program.
