Meet Dogs Up for Adoption at Long Island Shelters This Week

Destiny

With so many homeless animals awaiting their furever homes in Long Island shelters, it’s hard to decide on a new best friend. To help, each week we will showcase some amazing animals available for adoption as well as special events happening across LI.

DestinyAvailable at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh is Destiny! With brains and beauty, Destiny already knows commands such as “sit,” “paw” and even “lay down!” Destiny is a sweet and simple gal who enjoys the little things in life, such as being lazy and receiving belly rubs (so much so that she starts smiling when she gets one).

Destiny also enjoys playing in the kiddie pool and going for walks with her human buddies. She is very treat motivated, house trained, affectionate and even likes other dogs. Destiny is wary of new people, so she will need a very savvy owner who can help her get over her fear of new people.

Once she knows you, she is super cuddly, sweet and eager to be close to you. If you would like to learn more, please call the shelter to speak to a staff member today: 516-785-5220 or come in to fill out an application: 3320 Beltagh Ave., Wantagh.

RufusUp next is the amazing Rufus! He came to New York from North Carolina, where he was found lost in the woods in awful shape. Rufus was fixed up and rescued by an amazing New York-based organization known as Rescue Dogs Rock.

All seemed on the up-and-up for Rufus until he wound up in the care of a not-so-nice trainer ultimately accused of animal cruelty. Thankfully, early last year little Rufus found his way into a wonderful foster home where he continues to receive the love and proper training he so desperately deserves. This foster care has turned Rufus into the most lovable, laid back sidekick a human could ask for.

Rufus is about 3-4 years old and weighs 30-40 pounds. If adopted, Rufus needs slow introductions to other dogs and he does seem a little uneasy around cats. As per his current foster, favorite activities include having fun with squeaky toys and “cuddling up at the end of a bed with his cute little butt wiggling when you come home.”

I mean come on, who needs more than that? For information on adopting Rufus, please contact his current foster, Daisy, at 718-663-1737 or email her atdaisy9892@gmail.com.

MooseBut wait, there’s more! Meet Moose, a handsome 8-year-old Pit Mix rescued from Animal Care & Control back in 2013. Moose is a sweetheart that is so very loving once he gets to know you. He needs slow introductions to other dogs and would do best in a home with older children.

Moose would love a person who would take him on walks and hang on the couch with him. If you’re interesting in adopting this handsome fella, please contact Daisy at 718-663-1737 or email her atdaisy9892@gmail.com.
