Manhasset High School senior Ryan Thorpe, has been named a News 12 Long Island/Bethpage Federal Credit Union Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Thorpe has won a $1,000 scholarship and will be featured on an upcoming segment to air on News 12. He is also in the running to be named News 12/Bethpage Federal Credit Union Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
“It takes a truly impressive commitment on behalf of the student to be nominated and then win this award,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera. “Ryan personifies our district’s vision of educating and nurturing well-rounded young men and women. Please join me in congratulating Ryan, his family, his teachers and his coaches on this tremendous honor.”
For the past four years Thorpe has been a member of the cross-country and winter and spring track teams. He has led Manhasset to three county championships as well as three appearances in the state cross-country tournament, and has served as captain of the cross-county squad. Thorpe is a three-time All-County and All-Conference runner.
In addition to his prowess on the field, Thorpe has taken on numerous leadership roles at Manhasset High School and in the community. He is president of the English Honor Society, vice president of the Italian Honor Society, and cofounder, historian and Student Senate representative for the Manhasset Historical Society. Thorpe is also a talented vocalist, serving as manager of the symphonic choir and as a member of the Kinsmen vocal group. He has also played key roles in the Don Scott 5K run to raise funds in the fight against colon cancer, the annual Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer 5K run and the annual toy drive to benefit Schneider Children’s Hospital (now known as Cohen Children’s Medical Center).
To be considered for the News 12/Bethpage Federal Credit Union Scholar-Athlete award, student-athletes must achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.5, a minimum SAT score of 1,200 and an ACT score of 30 or higher.
