Sears announced last week that its Hicksville location, at 195 N Broadway, will close in early April of this year. The Sears Auto Center will be closing later this month.

Between early March and early April, Sears Holdings will close 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores in total. The company said in a statement, “Sears Holdings continues its strategic assessment of the productivity of our Kmart and Sears store base and will continue to right size our store footprint in number and size. In the process, as previously
announced we will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members.”

Store employees were notified of the decision on Jan. 4. Eligible associates will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply to other store locations. Liquidation sales have already begun in some locations.

In 2017, Downtown Hicksville was selected as the winner of the New York State’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative in the Long Island region. Many improvements are in the works for the downtown area. It is not yet clear what will happen to the former Sears property.

The next Hicksville Downtown Revitalization planning committee meeting takes place Thursday, Jan. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, 28 W. Carl St., Hicksville.
