‘Athletes Of The Month’ In Oyster Bay

Recognized for exhibiting qualities that make them exemplary role models for their teammates, the Oyster Bay High School’s Department of Athletics announced its January selections for “Athlete of the Month.” Athletes are chosen by their coaches based on qualities such as leadership, dedication, attitude, level of improvement and skill. The sports spotlighted this week include boys’ basketball, girls’ bowling, cheerleading and fencing.

Boys’ varsity basketball player Anthony Reilly, a senior, is Athlete of the Month because he has “solidified himself as one of the most dominant players in Conference ABC, leading the Baymen to an 8-0 record,” according to coach Brian Boyle and assistant coach Dustin Abbatte. Reilly is off to a great start this season, averaging 19 points and 13 rebounds per game, also giving out four assists.

Stephanie Vojvodich was selected for the honor for her performance on the girls’ varsity bowling team. She has a bowling average of 122 and her highest game of the season was a score of 146. Her highest three-game series score was 387. Coach Keven Degnan said, “Stephanie is an asset to the program.”

Cheering for the winter cheerleading team for the past two years, eighth-grader Jessmy Palacios has earned the honor of Athlete of the Month because she “has improved tremendously since last year and continues to motivate herself and her teammates to try new skills and work hard,” coach Chelsea Bressingham said. “Jessmy brings a positive attitude to practice every day and is always excited to try new skills.”

A senior in her fifth year of varsity fencing, Jodi Yeh was named Athlete of the Month because she is on track to be one of the top fencers in Nassau County, according to coach John Bruckner. “She is a strong leader and is once again the foil co-captain,” he said. Last year Yeh was All-County and All-Long Island. She is continuing a strong season and currently has 18 wins and four losses.
