The Manhasset varsity hockey team skated to an incredible season finishing in first place in the division, which concluded a highly successful 2017-18 winter season. The team, coached by Kevin Smith, a St. Mary’s alumnus, topped the Mastroianni Division with 22 points in the High School Hockey League of Nassau County with an impressive 11-1 record. Competition in the division included North Shore, Wantagh/Seaford, Rockville Centre, Plainedge, Farmingdale and Plainview.
The team’s local success qualified them for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) State Tournament held in Jamestown, NY. There, Manhasset earned a spot in the semifinals and lost 3-2 in a thrilling game in triple overtime.
“It was an amazing run,” said Smith after the game. “I’ve been involved with hockey for a long time and today’s game was one of the best that I’ve ever been part of.”
The Manhasset hockey team, comprised of players in grades nine through 12, represented their community with class and good sportsmanship at the tournament.
Congratulations to seniors Kevin Becker, Chris Boisselle and Markus Mildt for being selected to play in the Nassau County Town of Oyster Bay’s All-Star Ice Hockey Invitational All-Star game at Bethpage’s Ice Skating Center. The venue will bring together star athletes from middle schools, junior varsity and varsity levels for three games.
Tony DeMayo, president of the High School Hockey League of Nassau County, said the players get a competitive jolt facing off against the best of the best in the All-Star Invitational.
“Playing in this game is the culmination of years of dedication to the sport and it is great to see the participants honored in this way,” said DeMayo. “It’s always a pleasure to work with the Town of Oyster Bay, because they share our commitment to foster and promote honesty, integrity, good sportsmanship, good fellowship, self-discipline, fairness, self-reliance, teamwork, self-confidence, leadership skills and positive decision making through the sport of ice hockey.”
