For the fourth consecutive year, the Port Washington School District has been named as one of the best communities for music education by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation.
“We are proud that the Port Washington School District has once again been designated as one of the best communities for music education in the United States by the NAMM Foundation,” said Port Washington Director of Creative Arts, K-12 Kevin Scully. “It is a reflection of not only the dedication of our tremendous music faculty and students, but also the importance that the board of education, the central administration and the Port Washington community gives towards its music program and the arts in general.”
Port Washington is one of 583 school districts in the nation to receive the distinction this year, which recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education. There are approximately 14,000 public school districts in the U.S.
The NAMM Foundation, assisted by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas, evaluates schools and districts based on their funding, highly qualified music teachers, commitment to high music standards, community support, and participation and access to music instruction.
“We are proud to be recognized as a school community committed to educating the whole child by providing a plethora of opportunities to our children to learn and perform music,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Mooney. “As a result, we consistently have a high number of students participating in various county, islandwide and state festivals. On behalf of the board of education, I thank Mr. Scully and our dedicated music faculty for their commitment to excellence, and of course our community, for its ongoing support of music in our schools.”
