Katz Institute for Women’s Health of Northwell Health held its 2018 women’s conference celebrating women’s health with the theme, “Just One More Thing…You,” to encourage women to give more priority to their own health while managing their busy lives. Stacey Rosen, MD, vice president, Women’s Health, Katz Institute for Women’s Health, says that it is “incredibly common for women to put their own health needs at the bottom of their daily to-do list, but the key to long term health is putting your well-being first. In other words, the last thing on your list shouldn’t be you.”
The event, held at the Long Island Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Uniondale, offered a morning panel discussion, “Be Your Own Health Advocate: What Women Need to Know,” on the importance of speaking up for oneself when navigating the healthcare system. Moderated by Tara Narula, MD, associate director, cardiac care unit, Lenox Hill Hospital and CBS News medical contributor, the panel of five Northwell physicians from a cross-section of specialties—Sonia Bahlani, MD; Jane Carleton, MD; Lucy Gade, MD; Jacqueline Moline, MD, along with Dr. Rosen, discussed the importance of a good physician-patient relationship—one that is based on clear communication and mutual respect.
The morning also featured a series of workshops with topics aimed at the health concerns of women, including breast and bone health, cancer genetics and prevention, heart health, stress and anxiety and weight management. After a break for a heart-healthy lunch in the main ballroom, the nearly 400 attendees listened to keynote speaker, Jennifer Ashton, MD, board-certified OB/GYN and chief medical correspondent for ABC News and Good Morning America. Ashton spoke about health issues facing women today and the importance of putting their health needs first, despite the pull of family and work responsibilities. The day ended with a series of interactive sessions devoted to staying active as part of self-care.
