Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 10, when the League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset honors Judy Temkin–Jacobson at its annual Spring Garden Party. Also being celebrated are life members Lee Seeman, Barbara Mausman Sonnenfeldt and Mina Weiner.
Judy Temkin–Jacobson moved to Manhasset in 2004. She had taught elementary school for 25 years in Milltown, NJ, and taught for a total of 34 years. Along the way she received various awards, including one in 1995 for Teacher of the Year, presented by the school district for her work with second–graders. Nominated by one of her students, Jacobson also received an award from Johns Hopkins for meeting the needs of gifted students.
Jacobson is a magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Queens College and additionally received a fellowship to study gerontology at Brown University.
In 2015, the Town of North Hempstead inducted her into the Women’s Roll of Honor. A director of the Port Washington-Manhasset League of Women Voters, she is on the Lunch with the League committee that hosts the annual State of the Town of North Hempstead address delivered by the town supervisor.
Jacobson has been a member of the league for about 50 years, having joined in Highland Park, NJ, in 1968. There, she served as president and chaired numerous studies. One study resulted in launching evening adult education courses for the Highland Park Community, which continues to this day.
Since 2009, Jacobson has served on the board of the league and has been the voter service chair for the past nine years. In that capacity, she has organized and/or moderated more than 35 candidates’ forums in the town of North Hempstead and beyond. As voter service chair, Jacobson arranges for candidates to agree on the date and the procedures for a forum, obtains the venue, finds timekeepers, moderators and vettors. These forums are often reported in the media or televised on Public Access Television educating voters on the candidates’ views.
In addition to the League, Jacobson is involved in helping children. For the last nine years, she has been mentoring children with special needs at the Munsey Park School. With members of the Shelter Rock Unitarian Universalist Congregation, she provided art activities for children enrolled in Adventures in Learning, an after-school program funded by the Hagedorn Foundation. For 20 years, in New Jersey, Jacobson initiated and ran a free after-school program for struggling readers. She incorporated the participation of both siblings and parents to read with the children. The program was highlighted in local papers.
Jacobson feels privileged to serve the Port Washington-Manhasset League of Women Voters and the Town of North Hempstead. She has two married sons and one grandchild, all of whom live in San Francisco. Judy is married to Dr. Louis Jacobson, who has three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild living in New York and Florida.
