The Port Washington Farmers’ Market will open for its 16th season on Saturday, June 9, on the Town Dock in Port Washington, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The market, a project of nonprofit Grassroots Environmental Education, is the only market in New York State that features primarily organic fruits and vegetables and other local, organic artisanal foods. The market has become a popular place to shop for residents who enjoy getting to know the people who grow their food.
“We run the farmers’ market as a service to the community. We like to think it improves the quality of life here, and many of our loyal customers agree,” says founder and market director Patti Wood. “We are strong supporters of local, sustainable food systems, and we believe that if you talk the talk, you need to walk the walk.”
The market is anchored by two large organic farmers from the East end of Long Island, the Golden Earthworm Farm and Orient Organics. Other vendors at the market include an organic flower grower from Emerald Farm, organic apples from the Old Bethpage Restoration Farm, purveyors of local fish, pasta, bread, olive oil, honey, gluten-free baked goods, pickles, organic kombucha, fresh squeezed organic juices, granola, organic hand made soaps and personal care products, pottery, trees and seedlings and other food-based items.
Fresh baked organic muffins, scones and organic coffee will be available for those who want to spend some time in the café with the morning paper or in conversation with friends.
Special events scheduled during the season include a free book exchange, alternative energy day and cooking demos.
Residents can track the activities of the market, including notices of fresh strawberries, apples and other seasonal items, by following the market on Facebook. For more information, call 516-883-0887.
