It was a busy weekend for the Manhasset girls varsity lacrosse team as the team hurtled their way from the Nassau County Class B Finals to the Long Island Finals.
The Indians faced rival Garden City, number two seed, on May 31 at Adelphi University. The evening was overcast and in the 60s as the Trojans faced off against Manhasset in Garden City. In their last face-off on April 18, the Indians defeated the Trojans easily with a score of 10-3. This time was no exception, as the Indians tromped Garden City 14-5. Excellent defense from Manhasset goalie Krissy Kowalski ensured that the Manhasset offense could do their thing and score goals.
Senior attack Shea Garcia scored three goals along with Emma LoPinto, a freshman. Kelly Trotta, Kate Bellucci and Maria Themelis each scored two goals and Grace Gately and Lindsay Giacobe scored one each. Manhasset secured the Conference One title. The last time the Manhasset girls lacrosse team won the title was four years ago in June 2014. The triumph propelled the team into the Long Island Class B finals on Sunday, June 3.
Sunday dawned gray with the possibility of showers, but the rain never came. The Sharks lived up to their name as they faced the Indians in the Long Island finals.
The cool weather must have helped Manhasset keep their cool as they battled a tough competitor, Eastport-South Manor, at Islip High School. The game was a nail-biter, with Manhasset finally winning in double overtime.
Eastport-South Manor’s Kasey Chroma is one of the top scoring players on Long Island with a record 45 goals and 21 assists for the season. Chroma only was able to score one goal Sunday, which tied up the score against Manhasset, but in the end, Grace Gately scored the winning goal to win the LI Class B Championship/ Southeast Regional Final 11-10.
Manhasset will play Fayetteville-Manlius on Friday at SUNY Cortland in the Class B state semifinals.
