As your director at the Manhasset Public Library, the staff and I look for opportunities to extend our services and foster connections with the community. Nothing sustains connections and supports change for the better than opportunities to volunteer and give back. We hope to assist parents in raising children who are engaged with their communities, who help others in need, and who work to make the world a better place.
Volunteering reinforces these values and helps youngsters to develop empathy, compassion, tolerance and gratitude. Volunteer work presents a great opportunity for teenagers to prepare for the future, engage with others as well as to improve their communities. And young people who volunteer are more likely to continue doing so as adults. The benefits of volunteering are enormous and the Library has opportunities for Teen Volunteering and for community give back.
Teens can sign up for the Teen Volunteer Corps to work on community service projects or assist with library programs and events. Information can be found on the library web page, Teen Zone, or by contacting 516-627-2300, ext. 301, or mplteenzone@manhassetlibrary.org.
This October, libraries across the island are sponsoring public work activities that underscore our commitments to make a difference and help transform the community. The Manhasset Public Library will be sponsoring the Great Give Back Food Drive. Our Library is partnering with local organization, Neil’s Wheels, to collect nonperishable food donations for Long Island Cares. Boxes for donations will be located in the lobby. Donations of nonperishable food will be collected from Friday, Oct. 12 through Monday, Oct. 15. We will host a kickoff day, Saturday, Oct. 13 as part of the islandwide Give Back initiative and will offer additional service actives and opportunities.
Come on in to the library and see what difference you can make in our community!
