The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently announced the hiring of Dr. Mary T. O’Meara to the position of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. O’Meara, of Lindenhurst, is an accomplished educator with a wealth of experience in promoting literacy in Long Island school districts.
“The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is excited to welcome Dr. O’Meara to our central administration,” said Superintendent Dr. Lorna R. Lewis. “We look forward to working with Dr. O’Meara and incorporating her forward-thinking vision for curriculum development as we continually look to enhance and grow our curriculum offerings and while creating new opportunities to further the educational experience for our students.”
The school district strives to empower its students and foster 21st-century skills including: creativity, citizenship, collaboration, and critical thinking. The district continues to invest in STEAM opportunities, and this year through additional STEAM classes and Discovery Lab field trips, its youngest learners are immersed in these 21st-century skills throughout the year. Under O’Meara’s leadership, the district will continue to integrate technology in innovative ways and focus on the social and emotional well-being of students through targeted professional development. These efforts played a critical role in the 2017-18 school year, when the district achieved the highest Advanced Regents Diploma rate in its history, with 84 percent of graduates earning the distinguished honor.

I look forward to working with my colleagues, faculty, students and the community to ensure we are doing everything in our power to grow students who are equipped with the skills, dispositions, and confidence to meet with success in their endeavors.”
O’Meara began her career as an English teacher and chairperson in the Massapequa School District. Following her time in Massapequa, O’Meara joined the Hewlett-Woodmere Schools as the district chairperson for English language arts, library media, and reading. She then became the assistant superintendent for curriculum at Amityville School District before returning to Massapequa as the curriculum associate for English language arts and library media. O’Meara received her undergraduate degree in English and secondary education from Molloy College, her Masters of Literacy Science from Dowling College and her doctorate in educational leadership and supervision from St. John’s University.
