South High School will present Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music on Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium at 341 Lakeville Rd.
The musical, which won four Tony Awards, is rarely attempted by high school students due to its complexity, according to Theatre South Director Thomas Marr.
Set in 1900 Sweden, A Little Night Music explores the tangled web of affairs surrounding actress Desirée Armfeldt and the men who love her—a lawyer named Fredrik Egerman and the Count Carl-Magnus Malcom.
When the traveling actress performs in Egerman’s town, the estranged couple’s passion rekindles. This strikes a flurry of jealousy and suspicion between Armfeldt, Egerman, his wife, Anne, and Armfeldt’s current romantic entanglement, the count, and his wife, Charlotte. Both men, along with their jealous wives, agree to join Armfeldt and her family for a weekend in the country at her mother’s estate. With everyone in one place, infinite possibilities of new romances and second chances bring endless surprises.
This unique and moving production is a celebration of love, which features an advanced score and masterful orchestrations, including Sondheim’s popular song, “Send in the Clowns.”

Premium reserved seating costs $35 per ticket, which includes a special intermission reception, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting scholarships for students to attend outside master classes.
