The annual Saint Baldrick’s Day will once again return to the Village of New Hyde Park where people will shave their heads to raise money in order to fight childhood cancer. The annual event is organized in conjunction with the Nassau County Police Department’s Third Precinct and the Village of New Hyde Park.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is an international nonprofit organization with the aim of raising funds to help find cures for children with cancer. The concept of the foundation is to have volunteers, who are sponsored by family, friends and employers, to shave their heads or “chop” their ponytails in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment in order to raise funds.
“We have been doing this for the past 10 years and have raised more than $425,000 during that time due to the support of the surrounding communities,” said Nick Mosesso, who is a retired police officer from the county’s third precinct and the lead organizer for the event.
According to Mosesso, the event will have about 20 businesses that have already donated gift cards for the event’s raffle prizes. North Shore Farms will provide food for the event while Pat Farrell, a former village clerk for New Hyde Park, will provide music and entertainment.
“We are currently at almost $10,000, but have set a goal of $45,000 this year,” explained Mosesso.
This year’s event will be on Tuesday, March 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Marcus Christ Hall located at 1420 Jericho Tpke., in New Hyde Park. To donate or to get involved, visit www.stbaldricks.org/events/NHPStB2019.
