Camp W: Where Kids Can Be Kids This Summer

Kids of all ages will soon be celebrating carefree days of summer fun and adventure.

With so many summer camps to choose from right here on Long Island, a program that offers healthy activities to help make the season one the kids will never forget is indeed a treasure worth discovering. The ultimate camp experience provides opportunities for kids to make new friends, reconnect with old ones and learn and play in a safe, interactive environment, according to Camp W founder/owner, Evan Wofsy.

“Camp is so important. The experience of being outside playing, even inside playing … you’re taking away the distractions of the outside world. It’scompletely different from the ten months during the year,” says Wofsy. “At camp, their only job is to get as dirty as possible and be as tired as possible by the end of the day. That’s how you know the kids had a great day.”

Camp W opened in the summer of 2015 as a 8-week day camp offeringprograms for children in grades pre-Kindergarten through 9th grade. Activities include sports, swimming, creative and performing arts, computers, rocketry, robotics, a game room (X-Box, PlayStation, foosball, air hockey, darts, and so on)—all under the supervision of experienced, caring attentive counselors who truly enjoy their jobs. Early and late care is also offered.

Camp should feel like a home away from home, according to Wofsy, who attended camp for 14 summers as a camper and counselor and worked at another camp for 22 years thereafter. Wofsy says those were some of the best days of his life; being able to create that experience for Long Island campers is “a dream come true. At Camp W, campers and counselors embrace a family-like atmosphere; each camper receives five Camp W t-shirts with their name on it, and there is a small camper to staff ratio. Campers participate in weeklyteam building exercises, practicing and performing creative skits, songs or dances together. “It’s a lot like American Idol,” says Wofsy.

When kids are able to share their passion or learn new skills with their peers, their self-esteem and confidence improve, says Wofsy. Camp W’s “choice program” enables campers to choose from a variety of sports, creative arts and other activities. Each camper in grades 2,3,4 have two choice periods; grades 5,6,7 and 8 have three choice periods.

Camp W also offers events specific to each age group. Pre-K to 1st Grade enjoy three professional shows per week, including juggling, acrobatics or magic. Campers in grades 2 – 4 spend one latenight at camp and feast on a barbeque dinner with their parents. Every Wednesday, campers in grades 5-8 take a day trip—rock climbing, Lazer tag, etc. They also experience an overnight withfun-filled activities, a movie and breakfast. C.I.T.s get the best of both worlds, assisting counselors for half of the day and enjoying camper-inspired activities for the remainder.

Campers can bring lunch on Monday or Tuesday or participate in a pre-order lunch program from Suburban Eats; Wednesday is pasta; Thursday is pizza and Friday is barbeque.

Camp W is located at 121 Wolf Hill Rd., Huntington Station. Season: July1 – August 23. Sign up for 2 – 6 weeks. 631-692-6223 campwdaycamp.com
