Great Neck Social Center Events

Active Seniors Alert

If you are newly retired and looking for stimulating activities you’ve always wanted to try and now have the time to explore, the Great Neck Social Center offers bridge, mah-jongg, ping-pong, billiards, line and folk dancing, exercise, yoga, art workshops, inexpensive trips and more. Membership and many activities are free, some have a small fee. Come and see what you’ve been missing.

Stepping On

Janet Golan, an RN from Project Independence, will hold the popular seven-session fall prevention program in May. Stepping On will present guest speakers, such as a physical therapist, a vision specialist and an expert on getting around safely, on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Register early for the free program at 311 or 516-869-6311.

World in Depth

Meet with savvy seniors to make sense of what’s going on in the state, nation and globe every Thursday at 2 p.m. The talk gets animated, but is led by wise moderators, such as Dr. Stan Dacher, Shirley Romaine, Martin Bomser, Dana Epifan or an occasional guest. There is no charge to put in your own two cents.

Movie Day

Green Book, based on a true story about an African-American concert pianist and his Bronx-born Italian driver who go on tour through the south in 1962 and develop an unlikely friendship, will be shown for free at the center on Thursday, April 18, at 10 a.m.

Veterans Social Club

Veterans, their spouses, families and guests are invited to Veterans Social Club meetings on the second Friday of every month. The Friday, April 12, meeting at 12 p.m. will be a special luncheon to honor and thank the volunteers who help the social center run smoothly with lunch, front desk services, boutique sales, teaching classes, moderating World in Depth and serving on the board. Call for a reservation at 516-487-0025.

St. Francis Nurse

Nurse Kay will be at the center on Thursday, April 11, at 10 a.m. to check blood pressure and offer consultations. Take advantage of this free service, because Kay tells us that blood pressure rises with age and weight, so be aware of your numbers.
