Tell me about your role with Umanoff Boyer.
I am the owner and principal agent of the Umanoff Boyer Agency, a second generation company. My father became an agent in 1969 and in 1996, I joined and created the Umanoff Boyer Agency, which consists of two locations and a staff of 13 people.
As a full-service independent insurance agency, what does Umanoff Boyer provide for clients when it comes to insuring their home?
The best thing we can offer our insureds is advice. We want to educate them and make them aware of what they may need before they need it. Homeowners insurance isn’t about the cheapest price. If you don’t know what you need, it’s usually too late when you find out you need it. There are a lot of options that don’t automatically come on a policy so we also round out the service by providing all lines of insurance and making sure the client is properly insured to cover all their assets. Auto, umbrella, inland marine, watercraft and
on top of that we have two specialized departments for Life and Financials and Commercial Insurance.
What goes into insuring high-end residential homes, especially on the Gold Coast of Long Island?
Getting to know the property is essential for properly insuring high-end homes. Knowing the construction quality and built-in specialties are important to evaluate the replacement cost. Also, knowing the need for supplemental coverage for fine arts, antiques, jewelry and any special collectibles to make sure they are insured to value. We evaluate the need for flood insurance and represent numerous companies, including private client and private flood carriers. Getting to know the client and creating a relationship and trust so they know they can reach out to us for all their insurance questions and needs is also paramount.
What necessary steps should clients take to insure their assets?
They need to find an agency that can advise them and is knowledgeable in all aspects of the assets they need to insure. Take the time to discuss all their needs, even the ones they may not yet be aware of. Not just discussing their home and autos and other valuables, but knowing the total value of their assets so they have enough coverage. We want to make sure their liability limits are high enough to protect their assets. In a time when there are 800 numbers and on line self-quoting, we are sure that nothing is better than a relationship.
