Keeping our furry friends cool in the summer is no easy task. Even a jump in the pool or a run through the sprinkler can only quell the heat for so long. If you’re hot, your pet is probably hotter.

During a heat wave like the one Long Island is currently experiencing, keep pets inside with the air conditioner on full blast and treat them to some fun and refreshing ways to beat the heat.

Pets ASweet treats

We scream for ice cream and so do our pets…sort of. While most supermarkets carry dog-friendly ice cream like the Frosty Paws brand, try these homemade sweet treats that are super simple to make. For dogs, blend two teaspoons of coconut oil, two ripe bananas and half a cup of peanut butter in a blender. Pour into ice cube trays and freeze. You may want to consider a larger mold that way the treat lasts longer for your pup. For cats, incorporate some chicken stock and water and freeze into ice cube trays. Not only will this treat keep them occupied during playtime, it will taste delicious when they decide to eat it.

Pets BSelf-cooling pad

Sometimes a cold floor just don’t cut it. Gift your pet with a pressure sensory self-cooling pad that activates as soon as your pet’s paws hit the mat. A patented “green” pad technology uses a nontoxic gel formula to absorb body heat and reduce body temperature without water, electricity or refrigeration. Even better, after a short period of non-use, the pad automatically recharges itself, making it a perfect travel companion. Hand-washable or wipeable for easy cleanup.

The Green Pet Shop Self-Cooling Pet Pad is available in sizes small to extra large from $19.99 to $67 on www.chewy.com.

Pets CCooling bowl

Ice cubes are great treats for bite-sized refreshments, but give your pet a clean, cool bowl of water to stay hydrated during the summer months. A cooling bowl is a perfect solution to cool your pets off. Simply place the insert in the freezer overnight and place it back on the base to keep your pets’ water cool.

This Pawslife 16 oz. cooling bowl is available at Bed Bath & Beyond for $12.99.

Pets DMini air conditioner

This personal space air cooler and humidifier creates an atmosphere that’s clean and pure, cool but not dry. Arctic Air is the perfect personal air cooler and humidifier that is compact enough for any room in the house, especially if you have pets and want a little something extra to keep them chill. The space cooler uses evaporative technology by turning cold water—via a special filter—into cool, clean air.

The KISENG 8W 12V USB Mini Summer Arctic Space Cooler is available for $50.99 on Amazon.
