Dog owners rejoice: The Town of Oyster Bay recently announced that residents will now be allowed to bring their canine to a select number of neighborhood parks in the community. Town officials were joined by local dog advocacy groups and a couple of four-legged friends.
“As a dog lover and owner of two, I understand how enjoyable it is to bring our pets on outings where they can enjoy the nice weather and get some exercise,” said Councilman Steve Labriola, who was one of the main leaders in this initiative, according to the town. “I’ve spoken with many residents who have expressed their desires to walk their dogs at local neighborhood parks and I immediately began working with the Parks Department to make that dream a reality.”
Owners will need to follow rules that have been posted on signs at each of these parks, which include having your pet on a leash, having a valid drivers license on you and cleaning up after the dog.
The town board recently voted to allow pets at neighborhood parks designated by Town Parks Commissioner Joseph Pinto. With the exception of service animals, dogs are only permitted at these locations. Current parks selected are:
• B-11, located on Flamingo Drive and Caffrey Avenue in Bethpage
• H-16, located on Hunter Lane and Northern Parkway in Hicksville
• H-18, located on Tudor Road and Lyon Court in Hicksville
• F-6, located on Lincoln Street and Meadow Court in Farmingdale
• J-1, located on Maytime Drive and Mellow Lane in Jericho
• M-15, located on Burton Lane and Unqua Road in Massapequa
• M-16, located on Clocks Boulevard and Bayview Place in Massapequa
• M-17, located on Pittsburgh Avenue and Westwood Road in Massapequa
• P-15, located on Sylvia Lane and Warren Place in Plainview
• S-17, located on Townsend Drive and Cold Spring Road in Syosset
• S-20, located on Split Rock Road and Radley Drive in Syosset
• S-30, located on Market Drive and Woodbury Road in Syosset
“We looked at small neighborhood parks, or parklets, particularly those with lower attendance and open-space areas,” said Labriola. “We’ve designated these 12 locations as a start and will certainly consider adding new locations in the future.”
The town will also be adding upgrades to the town’s existing dog park, located at Clocks Boulevard and East Pine Street in Massapequa, and is creating a new north shore facility, for which construction is underway.
