Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola recently announced the return of the Future Islanders Learn to Play Program that introduces boys and girls, ages 5 to 8 to the great game of hockey. The program begins on Dec. 3 at the Town of Oyster Bay’s outdoor rinks in Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park in Woodbury.
“The New York Islanders, the National Hockey League, the National Hockey League Players Association and the Town of Oyster Bay have teamed up once again this year to provide an exciting opportunity for the youth in our community with the ‘Future Islanders Learn to Play Program’,” said Saladino. “Local children are invited to join this amazing experience as it offers a unique opportunity to develop basic skating and hockey skills under the guidance of experienced former NHL players.”
The ‘Future Islanders Learn to Play Program’ includes eight on-ice training sessions led by the Town of Oyster Bay coaching staff with appearances by Islanders alumni Arron Asham and Radek Martinek. Asham, a forward, played for 15 seasons and six different teams in the NHL, scoring 94 goals and 114 assists, with nearly half of each coming with the Islanders. Martinek, a defenseman, played for 12 seasons and 486 games in the NHL. He scored 24 goals and 85 assists in his 11 years with the Islanders.
The program fee is $200. All registrants will receive a CCM equipment package that includes a jersey, helmet, shoulder pads, gloves, skates, sticks, elbow pads, pants, socks, shin pads and an equipment bag.
