When St. Dominic’s High School started their varsity boys hockey team this season, they might have expected it to be a long-term process that would eventually lead to success.
However, the Bayhawks managed to have a phenomenal inaugural year as they went 18-2 during the regular season which secured first place in their division.
The Bayhawks went on to sweep the Holy Cross Knights in the semifinals, winning 4-2 and 7-3, respectively, in the first two games of the best-of-three series. That allowed them to advance to the Class A Championship, which set them up to face the Xaverian Clippers, who were the previous year’s Catholic High School Hockey League (CHSHLA) Class A champions.
In their first game of the best-of-three matchup, the Bayhawks won, 8-7, in a tightly-contested overtime game at the Northwell Ice Center.
Team captain Joe Congero had two goals and two assists in the game while Michael Lyu, also a captain, scored the game-winning goal.
