An Update From The Farmingdale Mayor

The following is an update from Mayor Ralph Ekstrand

We hope everyone is well and staying safe. Governor Cuomo’s New York Pause is shifting into a phased opening by region in New York State, and Nassau County is close to meeting the criteria (5 of the 7 goals) to move into phase 1 for re-opening.

We are pleased to announce that Servpro of Farmingdale/Massapequa has volunteered to clean/disinfect Farmingdale Village Hall, providing a safe work environment – safe public space for when we re-open. Servpro also volunteered to clean/disinfect the Village Fire House! Thank you Servpro of Farmingdale Massapequa for your generosity during this unprecedented crisis – your services are truly appreciated!!

As Main Streets throughout Long Island get ready and plan to re-open according to the phased-in protocols, Farmingdale Village will be ready to open, the Board of Trustees and I are working with the downtown merchants on a re-opening plan within the requirements set forth by Governor Cuomo. The Village is planning additional outdoor dining capacity for Fridays and Saturdays for the summer to add outdoor dining space downtown while also meeting the 6-foot distancing requirements at eateries (due to anticipated decreased capacity guidelines from New York State). More details to follow.

Everyone in town has been asking for a bakery and … Farmingdale finally has a bakery – Le Petit Café / Bakery – Market, complements of Kristina Grimes. Thyme On Your Side was re-branded/relaunched as Le Petit Café, a French-style bakery, café, market located in the heart of downtown, at 314 Main Street. While we are sorry about the timing of the cafe re-launch, we are happy to announce this wonderful cafe! Le Petit Cafe has an amazing array of all-natural, delectable food items, such as fresh baked french pastries, Italian / American items, breads, cookies, cupcakes, croissants, pound cakes as well as breakfast, lunch and more! Additionally, Le Petit Cafe is also a market, selling there own products, local and national items such as olive oils, coffee, teas and more. Congratulations Kristina, we wish you much success!!

Some spring flowers are planted throughout the Village, and we are happy to announce that the Farmers Market run by Schneider’s Farm, will return to the Farmingdale Village Green on Sundays, starting June 7, from 10 am-3 pm, weather permitting with social distancing.

Re-construction work is progressing at Parking Lot 4, the last lot downtown to be revitalized as part of the parking lot upgrade project in the Village. This parking lot is located behind the Fire Department/317 Main Street/Dark Horse). Lot 4 will get a top coat of paving on Friday then striping on Saturday or Monday, depending upon rainfall. However, due the coronavirus the manufacturing and thus the supply of many of the light poles will not be able to be installed until mid to late June. The resurfacing and upgrades will provide enhanced safety, walkability, new led lighting, self-watering planters, and signage.

Stay tuned for more announcements – Farmingdale Village is a pilot area for a philanthropic effort (to be announced shortly).

Farmingdale Village Looks Forward to Coming Back Strong! Who Saw Farmingdale Village featured on both NBC and CBS News last Wednesday?!

Also, a recent episode of FBI: Most Wanted which aired on CBS, included some filming in Farmingdale Village at/near Taste of Asia.

Dalers for Dalers Update

The Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce has had great success raising donations to feed local families and HealthCare Heroes with the “DALERS for DALERS” program. The Chamber has been matching donations and has fed over 40 families and 100 workers. Dalers for Dalers collected over $6,500 to send meals to the homes of Farmingdale residents working in hospitals. Donations are still coming in and our local heroes are very appreciative. Please consider donating whatever you can to support this effort to help our fellow Dalers while also helping to support Farmingdale’s small businesses. For additional information regarding this program, please visit the Farmingdale Chamber website www.FarmingdaleNYchamber.org.

Be Aware of Potential Scam Email and Phone Scams

National Grid is warning customers to beware of a new phone scam where impostors are demanding immediate bill payment and threatening service disconnection. This latest scam, which is targeting customers already facing hardships due to COVID-19, involves callers who pretend to be National Grid representatives. They tell customers that unless payment is made within 30 minutes, their power will be shut off. The customer is then directed to call “the direct billing department to make a payment and avoid power disconnection.”

The scammers use sophisticated phone systems that display National Grid on the customer’s caller ID. Additionally, the phone number customers are instructed to call closely resembles the company’s recorded messaging and phone prompt directions. These elements make it difficult to differentiate an actual National Grid call from an impostor’s call. When in doubt, customers should hang up and call the National Grid customer service number on their bill.
