The J.C. Penney department store at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream is undergoing liquidation sales as it prepares to close down this summer after more than a half century at that location.

This closing is part of the company’s plan to close 137 locations across 37 states after the department store chain filed for bankruptcy. Liquidation sales commenced with up to 40 percent discounts and are expected to last between 10 to 16 weeks.

“We will continue to operate the majority of our stores and our flagship store, jcp.com, to ensure our valued customers continue to have access to the products and brands they need and want,” the company said on its blog

The Texas-based, 118-year-old retail chain filed for bankruptcy on May 15 due to accumulating more than $4 billion in debt, dwindling sales, and the coronavirus pandemic forcing temporary store closures. As a result, approximately 250 of its 846 stores are projected to be shut down by the middle of 2021.

The Green Acres location was originally slated to close in April, but those plans were delayed by the COVID-19 economic shutdown.

J.C. Penney previously closed locations at Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove and in Massapequa. The last two J.C. Penney stores on Long Island are at Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City and Westfield South Shore in Bay Shore.
