A driver was arrested for allegedly hitting two Black Lives Matter protesters with his car in Huntington Station on Monday evening, Suffolk County police said.
Anthony Cambareri was driving a 2018 Toyota RAV4 westbound on Broadway when he struck two protesters who were standing in the roadway at 6:45 p.m., police said.
The victims were taken to Huntington Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver was not injured and his vehicle was impounded for a safety check. The 36-year-old Coram man was charged with third-degree assault, issued a desk appearance ticket, and will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
The incident comes a month after another driver was arrested after being caught on video nearly running over a 16-year-old girl who was part of a protest in West Babylon.
The protests that the victims were participating in were among dozens locally in the past month in support of nationwide demonstrations sparked by a shocking video of a white Minneapolis police officer allegedly killing an unarmed black man by placing a knee on his neck and ignoring the victim’s pleas that he couldn’t breathe. Four cops were fired and charged in the death of George Floyd.
