Approximately 1 in 54 children in the United States is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. It is often challenging for parents trying to navigate how to best plan for their child and ensure that they are receiving the care they need. Planning for a child with special needs goes beyond scheduling doctor’s appointments. There are many questions in trying to understand the legal challenges presented to parents.

What is the significance of Power of Attorney and a Health Care Proxy? How does the guardianship process work? What benefits does New York State currently provide? These topics will be discussed in the upcoming webinar, “Plan for Your Child with Special Needs,” on March 3 at 10 a.m. The webinar is hosted by Schneps Media, the parent company of the Long Island Press.

The webinar will feature speakers Melissa Negrin-Wiener, a partner at the top ranked firm, Cona Elder Law, and Debora Thivierge, BCaBA, CBAA, the executive director and founder of The ELIJA school, a school that assists both children and adults diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Wiener specializes her practice in Medicaid eligibility planning, asset protection planning, disability matters, guardianships and estate planning. Thivierge has spent 18 years providing assistance to families and educators to better help individuals with autism receive evidence-based instruction.
