New Yorkers ages 60 and older will not need an appointment to be vaccinated for Covid-19 at several state-run vaccination sites starting Friday, April 23, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today.

The vaccination sites at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, SUNY Old Westbury, and Aqueduct Race Track in South Ozone Park, Queens, are among the 16 sites statewide that will be accepting walk-ins for residents 60 and older. Jones Beach State Park and SUNY Stony Brook in Stony Brook and Southampton, however, still require appointments.

“We are continuing to make steady progress with getting more shots into people’s arms, and we are expanding our operation across the state with additional vaccination sites so we can increase our capacity,” Cuomo said. “Our providers and local partners have been instrumental in helping us make the vaccine distribution fair and equitable.”

Cuomo made the announcement at a state-run vaccination site in Yonkers on Wednesday. He added that the state’s Covid-19 positivity rate on a 7-day average is 2.69 percent, the lowest since Nov. 11, 2020. It is 2.95 percent on Long Island.

The announcement comes as nearly 30 percent of New Yorkers have been fully vaccinated, with 42 percent receiving at least one dose. More than 1 million Long Islanders have received at least one dose of the vaccine, with nearly 680,000 being fully vaccinated.

“We know the vaccine works, but only if we all take it,” Cuomo said. “Getting the vaccine is not only about you. You are a member of a community and you can make somebody else sick by not getting vaccinated, so I urge everyone who still needs to make an appointment to do so quickly.”
