Matthew Cohen, former executive director of government relations at Long Island Power Authority, has been named the new president and CEO of Long Island Association (LIA), a leading business organization on Long Island which he has been a part of for the past 10 years.

Previously the vice president of government affairs and communications at LIA, the Northport resident has served as a chief lobbyist for laws to benefit Long Island’s businesses, especially over the past 15 months during the pandemic.

“When businesses on Long Island are successful, every Long Islander benefits,” Cohen said. “The LIA will continue to be a tireless advocate for the region’s small, mid-sized and large businesses in this post-Covid climate and I look forward to continuing my work with the staff and board of directors as president of the LIA.”

As president, Cohen said he’d like to expand outreach and support programs for small businesses, lobby for Long Island on the proposed federal infrastructure package, and enhance the organization’s technological offerings to its members.

“Matt Cohen’s vision to maintain the LIA’s leadership role, his broad background and experience, and his commitment to Long Island made him the clear choice for the position at this critical juncture,” said LIA Chairman Larry Waldman. “Over the last decade at the LIA, he has proven his commitment to growing our region’s economic health, assisting businesses of all sizes and advocating for the best interests of all Long Islanders.”

Before joining LIA, Cohen helped secure millions of dollars for projects at LIPA, including launching a 10-year, $1 billion energy efficiency program. Cohen also previously served as the Long Island director for U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and as Suffolk County Executive Assistant.

A lifelong Long Islander, Cohen sits on the boards of Discover Long Island, Child Care Council of Suffolk County, and the Long Island chapter of the New York State League of Conservation Voters. He is an attorney admitted to the New York State bar, with a law degree from Maurice A. Dean School of Law at Hofstra University and bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
