Curran Proposes Direct Cash Relief For Homeowners In Nassau

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently proposed that Nassau County dedicate $100 million to provide direct cash relief to county households. Nassau County’s projected budget surplus of $75 million and incoming federal funding from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) make the announcement possible. Nassau County, which experienced unprecedented negative economic impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, is receiving $385 million from the federal government—$200 million in 2021. Under Curran’s proposed plan, approximately 300,000 homeowners in Nassau County would receive a payment of roughly $375.

“I have heard a resounding message from homeowners across the county that relief is needed. The program I’m proposing would provide direct cash assistance to about 300,000 households. Nassau County has navigated the pandemic without layoffs or cuts to programs that keep our communities healthy and safe. Having achieved a hard-earned budget surplus and with federal money coming in, we must now provide direct relief to homeowners in Nassau County. I am calling on the County Legislature to support this important program and will work with my Economic Advisory Council to get this done,” Curran said.

The Nassau County Homeowner Assistance Program would provide direct relief to county households. Nassau County has seen unprecedented job losses, food insecurity and other negative effects from COVID-19. This program would seek to utilize Basic and Enhanced STAR data in order to determine eligibility. The county’s plan for allocation of ARP funding must be approved by the Nassau County Legislature.
