Nassau DA Madeline Singas Nominated to NYS Court of Appeals

Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas has been nominated to the New York State Court of Appeals, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday.

Singas would fill the seat of Judge Leslie Stein, who retires in June, and her position is pending confirmation by the New York State Senate. 

“I am honored by the governor’s nomination to serve on New York’s highest court,” Singas said in a statement, “and I look forward to the confirmation process.”

Cuomo also announced Judge Anthony Cannataro, administrative judge in the Civil Court of the City of New York, as a nominee for the Court of Appeals, who would fill the vacancy of Judge Paul Feinman who died in March, as well as his appointments for the appellate division and nominees for the Court of Claims.

“New York State’s courts deserve the best and brightest minds to uphold principles of law and fairness and move our state forward, and these judges are no exception,” Cuomo said in a statement. “These individuals bring a wealth of knowledge and diverse backgrounds and experience to their positions, and I am confident their service will benefit New Yorkers for years to come.”

Singas was first elected as Nassau’s district attorney in 2015. During her time as the county’s lead prosecutor, she has created the Immigrant Affairs Office to focus on crimes against immigrants and the Community Partnership Program to match people with services to help them integrate back into the community post-incarceration.

Singas previously served as Chief Assistant District Attorney of Nassau County and head of its first Special Victims Bureau in the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office She was also an assistant district attorney in the Queens County District Attorney’s Office from 1991 to 2006. She holds a Juris Doctor degree from Fordham Law School and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Barnard College at Columbia University.
