The Hempstead man who allegedly shot his former employees at a West Hempstead Stop & Shop in April, killing one and injuring two, got hit with extra charges during his arraignment on Friday, according to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas.
Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, 31, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, four counts of second-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is due back in court on July 7 and faces up to 25 years to life in prison if he is convicted of the top charge.
Stop & Shop manager Ray Wishropp, 49, of Valley Stream, died of his injuries from the shooting. According to investigators, on April 20, Wilson, who was a worker there, allegedly entered the second-floor manager’s office and shot one victim in the shoulder, a second victim twice in the shoulder, and grazed the second victim’s face with another shot.
Wilson then allegedly entered another office where he fired multiple rounds, nearly shooting two victims and shooting Wishropp in the chest. Wishropp was pronounced dead at the scene. Wilson fled the scene on foot with a .380 caliber semiautomatic weapon, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
Members of the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Bureau and Bureau of Special Operations, in cooperation with Hempstead Village Police, found and arrested Wilson at around 3:50 p.m. at 100 Terrace Ave. in Hempstead that day.
Jared Rosenblatt, chief of the Nassau County District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau, and Senior Litigation Counsel Stefanie Palma are prosecuting the case. Brian J. Carmody, Esq., is representing Wilson.
