Manhasset Police Activity League (PAL) and Town of North Hempstead unveiled a new electronic scoreboard made possible by a generous donation from North Shore University Hospital (NSUH).

The dedication took place at Manhasset Valley Field—part of the Town of North Hempstead’s Manhasset Valley Park—during the PAL sixth grade baseball semifinals on June 9. NSUH Executive Director Jon Sendach threw out the first pitch.

“North Shore University Hospital has an important bond with the Town of North Hempstead,” Sendach said. “We are deeply rooted in this community. We are the largest employer in Manhasset and many of our team live here too. That’s why the hospital wanted to show our support for Manhasset PAL through the donation of this fantastic scoreboard at Manhasset Valley Park.”

Manhasset PAL Baseball and Softball currently has 450 boys and girls at eight grade levels participating across 30 intramural and 11 travel teams. COVID-19 cancelled its spring baseball season in 2020. Under the bright lights of the 18-foot digital scoreboard newly installed at Manhasset Valley Field, the playoffs roared on with fans in the stands—a sign of normalcy on Long Island as the pandemic ebbs.

“Manhasset Valley Field fills a critical role for the community as the center of youth baseball for the Town,” Brad Smith, president of Manhasset PAL Baseball, said. “Each year, more than 450 kids play at the field with games every night from late March through early November. The community’s investment in making this program the largest of its kind in Nassau County is only accomplished through our partnership with the Town of North Hempstead and the community at large. North Shore University Hospital’s donation helps us to make the program even stronger.”

The scoreboard was purchased through a gift from North Shore University Hospital to Manhasset PAL, which in turn donated it to the town of North Hempstead. Now the field has a revitalized look and function.

“We are so thankful to North Shore University Hospital for their partnership with the Town and for their generous donation of this state-of-the-art scoreboard,” North Hempstead Councilmember Veronica Lurvey said. “It will be a great addition to games played by Manhasset PAL teams as well as everyone who plays at our wonderful field in Manhasset Valley Park.”
