New Interim Director Of PE Coming To Manhasset Schools

Manhasset Public Schools has appointed Tom Howard as the district’s new interim director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics.

Currently, Howard is an adjunct professor in Adelphi University’s Department of Health Studies and Exercise Sciences. His role includes teaching physical education, health education, aquatics, sports management and sports-based youth development courses.

Howard’s experience includes more than 40 years in education, including as the director of health, physical education and athletics for Farmingdale Public Schools for 11 years. In addition, Howard served as the interim director for several districts, including Roslyn, Plainview-Old Bethpage, Locust Valley and most recently North Babylon.

Howard holds a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education, recreation and driver education from Southern Connecticut State University and a master’s degree from Adelphi University in health education. He also received a professional diploma in educational administration from Long Island University. He is a past president of the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD) and previously served on the organization’s board of directors.

Presently, Howard is the NYS AHPERD Foundation secretary.

“I am honored and excited to be able to join the Manhasset School District family,” Howard said. “I am keenly aware of the rich history and traditions of Manhasset’s academic and athletic excellence and look forward to leading our teachers, coaches and athletes to even greater successes.”

The appointment of Howard became effective on July 1.

“We are very excited to welcome Mr. Howard into our community,” acting Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gaurav Passi said. “Mr. Howard brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that we know will be an asset to the District.”
