North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board announced that the C.A.R.E. Program have been offering an in-person summer program for children and adults with developmental disabilities who reside in the town.
The free summer program will be held for six weeks, Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It began on July 6.
The Town’s C.A.R.E. program, managed and supervised by the Viscardi Center, is a year around full day Saturday Respite and Recreation program for North Hempstead residents ages 8 and older with developmental disabilities. Except on holidays, the program is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It provides a unique experience for participants to socialize and explore their communities through social, education and recreational activities and excursions.
Past activities have included crafts, cooking, music, movies and seasonal swimming; along with community outings to bowling alleys, movie theaters, parks and much more.
The program is free and there is no cost for transportation to activities and outings. To be eligible for the program individuals must be supported through the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, have a TAB number and be screened for admission. The Viscardi Center can offer guidance for applying for eligibility.
