After reports that Book Revue, one of Long Island’s largest independent bookstores, would soon close due to an eviction notice from its landlord, owner Richard Klein confirmed that the Huntington staple “likely will have to close its doors after 44 years in business.”

In response, hundreds of people, including regular customers, authors, and out-of-town visitors alike have been expressing their sadness over losing the significant cultural hub. Aside from being one of few surviving brick-and-mortar bookstores, Book Revue also holds frequent author visits, poetry readings, a monthly book club, and other events that bring people together, whether in person at the store or on Zoom.

“The outpouring of community support has been overwhelming,” Klein wrote in a post on social media. “We want to thank all of you who have expressed your feelings about the store and its importance to the community.”

Klein also noted that some people were trying to raise money to save the bookstore, but declined the help. “While we appreciate this effort, we are not looking to raise funds at this time,” he wrote. “As the situation evolves over the next few weeks, we will keep you all apprised of developments.”

In the comments section of the post, many current and former Huntington residents expressed similar sentiments that Book Revue made the village feel like home. Others shared memories of visiting the store with friends and family to work, shop, read, study, or meet an author.

Here are some of the notable comments:

My parents passed long ago, but I’ve always felt a trip to Book Revue was as comforting as hanging out at the kitchen table, yakking it up with Mom. Such a sad moment for us all.

I attended two book signings there, for Michael Moore and Jackson Galaxy. They were both outstanding. And I’m reading a book now that I purchased there that has given me priceless information on my family heritage. Thank you for so many wonderful memories, and so sorry this is happening.

An unforgettable afternoon at Book Revue. Here with Duff Mckagan of Guns N’ Roses.

I am so sad to hear this. My daughter has grown up going to the book revue. We would go there with our dog when she was a toddler and sit together and read “good dog carl” and other books. she became a reader in your store. And now, as a teenager, her favorite thing to do is go to the book revue with a friend to browse and sit and read a book and then buy a stack of books. We will really miss you if the store closes. I hope some other location can be found.

I have the fondest of memories of bringing my children there as toddlers for story time -and it’s the only place I purchase books. I moved here 20 years ago, I walk into town almost on a weekly basis and the Book Revue was always a sole fulfilling experience. I will miss it so very, very much and wish I had the financial power to do something! Good luck to you.

Book Revue has been a staple for my family for so many years. Our third generation was introduced to your wonderful establishment with Thursday morning music….we truly hope this situation changes.

Your store will forever hold a big place in my heart. My husband Kyle and I not only met several of our favorite musicians at signings there, but it’s where he and I met for the first time. Whatever the outcome, I wish you all my gratitude and best wishes.

A picture of the Book Revue taken in 2009 from inside Canterbury Ales, another Huntington village staple that I still sorely miss. Why can’t we have nice things?

My study group met in your upstairs tables to get me through anatomy and physiology in massage school. The hints and tips have stayed with me – that was 21 years ago. Thank you for being the sanctuary of knowledge and connection. Bravo Job well done. Safe travels on your next adventure you will be missed.

This is heartbreaking! One of my favorite stores in Huntington. I met my favorite Yankee, Paul O’Neill there at a book signing, and have also been there for a book signing with a local author/friend, Stephanie Kepke. I hope that you are able to relocate rather than closing entirely.

I really will miss finding special used/out of print books on the shelves mixed in with everything else. I can spend hours looking through the shelves and tables for my next great read. I am hopeful that the store can open in another location.

I treasure the three years I worked in returns, Richard. Hands down, my job at Book Revue was my favorite
