Suffolk County police are asking for the public’s help in finding the person or people who detonated an unspecified device that formed a crater on Fox Island pn Sunday morning.

After police received multiple 911 calls reporting a loud noise in the First Precinct shortly before 11 a.m., Marine Bureau officers located the four-foot-wide, two-foot-deep crater on Fox Island, an uninhabited island off the coast of the Town of Babylon, police said.

The crater appears to have been created when the device was detonated, police said. There were no injuries reported.

Investigators released a photo of a striped boat that was seen leaving the area at the time of the detonation. Authorities hope the public can help to identify and locate the operator of the vessel.

Arson Section detectives are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information on the case to call them at 631-852-6024 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
