State Sen. Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach) announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election or run for any other office this year, three months after an unsuccessful bid for Nassau County District Attorney.

The representative for District 9 of the New York State Senate will now be voted on without an incumbent candidate this year. Kaminsky lost in the November 2021 election for district attorney to Republican Anne Donnelly.

“It has been an honor to represent the communities of the South Shore of Long Island for the past seven years,” Kaminsky, 43, said in a statement, “but I believe it is the best thing for my family to pursue a new path.”

Kaminsky has been a state senator since 2016, when he won a special election to replace Republican Dean Skelos, who was convicted on corruption charges. Previously, Kaminsky was a federal prosecutor and a state assembly member. He also serves as the chairman of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee.

Kaminsky reflected on his 18 years in public service in Wednesday’s statement.

“I know I can look back proudly on the many accomplishments in which I was lucky to have played a part,” he said. “Whether it was fighting on behalf of our planet and coastal communities by authoring and passing nation-leading environmental legislation; helping 9/11 first responders or Sandy victims get the recognition they deserve; helping differently-abled students access a high school diploma; or just ensuring a constituent got her heat turned on or that unemployment check delivered, I am grateful to have been in a position to help make a difference.”
