A New Jersey woman and her boyfriend have been arrested for allegedly killing the woman’s 5-year-old son in Brentwood last year, Suffolk County police said.

Valerie Owusu, 26, and her 27-year-old boyfriend, Emmanuel Addae, were each charged Thursday with second-degree murder in the death of King Owusu.

Third Precinct police officers responded to an apartment on Leroy Avenue, where the child was unresponsive and unable to move on April 1, 2021, police said. The victim was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed the child sustained blunt force trauma throughout his body, authorities said.

Homicide Squad detectives investigated the case, prosecutors presented the evidence to a grand jury, the couple was indicted, and a warrant was issued for their arrest. The couple was arraigned Friday at Suffolk County court in Riverhead. Attorney information for the couple was not immediately available.
