Nassau County has named a new health commissioner to replace Dr. Larry Eisenstein, who is leaving his post this month.

Dr. Irina Gelman, the health commissioner of Orange County, will move from Orange to Nassau after approval from the state. Nassau’s board of health unanimously approved her nomination made by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

“I definitely relish the opportunity and look forward to hit the ground running,” said Dr. Irina Gelman. “I have grand shoes to fill after Dr. Larry Eisenstein’s departure.”

Eisenstein is stepping down from his job as the county’s top health official to pursue an opportunity in the private sector, Blakeman said, adding that though Eisenstein will be missed, he is pleased to bring in Dr. Gelman.

“She’s hands on and most importantly, she was right there in the epicenter of the coronavirus efforts in Orange County to manage them through that crisis,” Blakeman said of her credentials. “When I spoke with her county executive, Steve Neuhaus, he had nothing but amazing things to say about Dr. Gelman.”

Eisenstein’s last day is July 29. He was the county’s health commissioner since 2011.
