New York baseball icon Dwight Gooden will walk at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park.” Gooden will participate in the event, as well as sign autographs and take pictures with eligible attendees.
The walk will be on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Eisenhower Park (Field 6) from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The event is free to participate in, though walkers are encouraged to raise funds for AFA’s mission to fight and cure Alzheimer’s Disease.
“When I was invited to be an Ambassador for this Walk, I immediately said yes because I know about the impact that Alzheimer’s disease has on many families. I am excited to help spread awareness and be a part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Walk to raise funds to help families impacted by this disease and to fund research for a cure,” Gooden said in a press release.
“In the fight against Alzheimer’s, each step counts, which is why we are encouraging everyone to walk with us on September 28,” Charles Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and CEO, said in a release.
“The funds and awareness raised will make a tremendous difference for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses in their time of need,” Fushillo said.
All proceeds raised at the walk will go to support the AFA’s services and programs for families affected by Alzheimer’s and research for a cure. The AFA offers outreach programs, memory screenings, professional training, and support groups to those affected by the disease.
Walkers who fundraise at least $100 will have the opportunity to meet Dwight Gooden and receive an autographed baseball, and walkers who raise at least $250 will have a photo opportunity with the player.
According to the AFA, more than 6.9 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s, including 60,000 Long Islanders. The number is expected to rise in upcoming years, the AFA says. The AFA aims to support and serve individuals with Alzheimer’s, as well as their affected family and friends.
