Temple Beth-El of Great Neck will offer Tuesday Night Symposiums from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in March and April—and throughout the year.
Taught by an impressive lineup of scholars and rabbis, the symposiums will offer opportunities for challenging study on various Jewish topics both in person and online.
Two special events will be held in preparation of Purim.
Rabbi Andrea Weiss from Hebrew Union College will present “What’s So Funny About the Book of Esther?” on March 4. Participants will study the one comedic book in the Bible, the “Book of Esther,” and learn what classifies Esther as a comedy and what makes the ancient story of this feminist heroine so relevant today.
On March 11, Rabbi Joe Skloot and Rabbi Aaron D. Panken, the modern Jewish intellectual history assistant professor at Hebrew Union College, will discuss Purim, the first Jewish holiday.
Temple Beth-El’s Rabbi A. Brian Stoller will lead four sessions on Christianity & Islam in Jewish law on March 18 and 25 and April 1 and 8.
Guiding attendees through classical Jewish legal sources, halachic responsa and modern legal theory, Rabbi Stoller will help participants learn how Jewish attitudes toward Christianity and Islam—and their practitioners—have evolved over time. Optional reading outside of class will elevate the learning experience.
The community is welcome to attend these enlightening programs through Temple Beth-El’s Miriam & Moses Center for Pluralistic Adult Jewish Learning. Registration is not required.
Temple Beth-El, a leader in shaping the future of pluralistic Judaism on the western North Shore, has served the community for more than 95 years and is located at 5 Old Mill Road.
