One week after the death of 12-year-old Nathan Ha, the Roslyn community continues to grieve, remember and come together in support of the family and one another.

Nathan, a seventh-grade student at Roslyn Middle School, was fatally struck by a speeding pickup truck on May 19 while walking along Middle Neck Road near Northern Boulevard in Flower Hill. His sudden and tragic passing has left the community in shock and mourning.

Described by those who knew him as a bright, kind-hearted boy with a gentle spirit, Nathan brought joy to his classmates, teachers, and church family. He was a loving brother to his twin sister and younger brother and a cherished son.

Dominick Jung, a close family friend, said, “It is with broken hearts that we share the devastating news of Nathan’s passing. He was a beautiful soul whose smile could light up a room. His loss is immeasurable.”

In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign launched to assist the Ha family with funeral expenses and time off from work has raised over $117.7 thousand. The overwhelming support speaks to the deep impact Nathan had on those around him, and the power of community during times of sorrow.

Local leaders have also expressed their condolences and renewed calls for increased safety.

Minority Leader DeReggi-Whitton said, “I was heartbroken to learn of the tragic incident. As we continue to mourn his loss, I urge everyone to take special care as they drive in our community. I will continue conversations with Commissioner Ryder and local leaders to identify ways to prevent another tragedy like this from occurring.”

Middle Neck Road has been the site of multiple accidents over the years. Nathan’s death comes months after the New York State Department of Transportation announced plans in February 2025 for traffic safety improvements at the intersection of Port Washington Boulevard and Middle Neck Road in Flower Hill. The proposed enhancements include adding a lane for through and right-turn traffic on southbound Port Washington Boulevard, extending left-turn lanes on both northbound and southbound sides, and installing new sidewalks, curb ramps, and high-visibility crosswalks.

Nathan was well known in the community and had personal connections with Themple Beth Sholom.

“When a tragedy like this occurs, we are all touched by grief. As a congregation, we must come together in times of need,” said Temple Beth Sholom President Debbie Dubowsky.

The Sid Jacobson JCC has also opened its doors to anyone in need of support.

“We recognize that grief shows up differently for everyone, and even those who didn’t know Nathan may be feeling the weight of this loss,” said Associate Executive Director, Community Engagement Susan Berman. “Whether you need someone to talk to or simply a space to reflect, we are here.”

Police have not yet released the name of the 18-year-old driver.
