A total of 24 students in the Syosset Central School District were named semifinalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Students qualified for this distinction by scoring among the highest in the state on the 2024 Preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“Being named a National Merit Semifinalist is a remarkable academic achievement,” said Christopher Ruffini, the high school’s  assistant principal. “This recognition reflects our students’ dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence.”

Seniors Christopher Ancona, Kingsley Cheng, Selena Chu, Evan Ding, Nora Han, Daniel Huang, Derek Huang, Gina Huang, Eliana Leder, Evan Lee, Shawn Lim, Yiran Liu, Grace Lu, Saanvi Peri, Nitin Rajagopalan, Sanskriti Rathore, Arjun Shah, Nikhil Shah, Sumair Singh, Shri Sughan Sriganesh, Adrian Tong, Carolyn Wang, Tracy Xie, and Catherine Yu were selected among the nation’s highest performing students on the exams.

The selected students are among approximately 16,000 high school seniors nationwide who were named semifinalists by the program, which represents less than 1 percent of all U.S. high school seniors.

The semifinalists qualify to compete for National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million. To advance to finalist standing, students must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn qualifying SAT or ACT scores.

Finalists will be announced in February, with National Merit Scholars to be named later in the spring.
