More than 230 people lost their lives during Superstorm Sandy's lethal trek from the Caribbean up the East Coast of the United States, millions lost power, and its total devastation stateside has been estimated at more than $70 billion. Sandy swallowed entire neighborhoods whole. Breezy Point, the Rockaways, Lindenhurst, Freeport, the city of Long Beach—the list goes on and on.
With the return of beach season, so too flock the crowds to Fire Island, the barrier island simultaneously known as a popular tourist destination and a hidden gem full of natural wonders. But FI is much more than that dichotomy allows. It’s home to Robert Moses State Park on the west end, Smith Point County Park on the east end and a national park featuring an eight-mile wilderness preserve. And in the middle, accessible by ferry only, are 17 car-free communities—most of which are strictly residential with a few having downtowns offering shops and nightlife.
AlyssaMarie Gerbasio, 23, of West Babylon, was traveling north on Straight Path at 7:12 a.m. March 17 when her 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee was struck by a 2015 Jeep Liberty headed east on 49th Street that attempted to cross Straight Path, according to Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives.
Walsh is on trial for scheming to defraud taxpayers of $80,000 in no-show work at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Suffolk County jail. Prosecutors allege Walsh falsely represented that he was working while he was actually gambling at Foxwood’s Casino in Connecticut, golfing, or conducting Conservative Party business on the taxpayer dime. The party big was also accused of lying to FBI agents when he allegedly claimed he worked flex time for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office.
The new commish will be tasked with cleaning up the mess left by a former police chief who was arrested on corruption charges. Among his first moves was announcing plans to invite the FBI to work more closely on the Long Island Serial Killer case, gang investigations and other probes. He also unveiled plans to revamp the internal affairs unit, crack down on drug houses, and hinted at an upcoming "unprecedented" law enforcement partnership.
